The design for the obverse side bears the Walking Liberty half dollar design that was used between 1916 and 1947, created by Adolph A. Weinman (1870-1952). This iconic design is one of the most beloved portrayals of any United States coinage of modern times The United States Mint describes the obverse features as “… an ever hopeful Lady Liberty striding confidently toward the sunrise, draped in the strength of the Stars and Stripes carrying in her arms branches of laurel and oak to symbolize both civil and military glory.” The obverse side bearsWeinman’s initials on the hem of Lady Liberty’s gown, and inscriptions with the year of minting or issuance, the word “Liberty”, and the phrase “In God we trust.”

The reverse side was designed by John Mercanti. It depicts a heraldic eagle behind a shield, clutching an olive branch in its right talon, and arrows in its left one, as in the Great Seal of the United States. Above the eagle there are thirteen five-pointed stars for the thirteen original Colonies. The banner in the eagle’s beak bears the phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM (Out of many, one). The reverse also has the inscriptions”United States of America”,”1 oz. Fine Silver”, and “One Dollar.”
